Time for Civil Disobedience?

Bicycle on a gravel trail in front of a sign saying 2020 Climate Action Now Tick Tock Tick Tock.

I saw this sign three years ago on the Waterford River Trail, the only bit of cycling infrastructure we have anywhere near the city centre in St. John’s. At the time I was optimistic that more would soon be built. All levels of government said they would.

Emily Doyle wrote a letter to the Telegram last week explaining why she and her children decided to break the rules and ride on pedestrian trails. I do too, and on sidewalks. I don’t want to break the law or to inconvenience pedestrians but I want my grandchildren to know I did what I could to leave the world livable for them, and also to make our community one where they could move around freely and safely. Is it time for civil disobedience? I think it’s long past time.
