Early in the pandemic I saw this sign in the window of a rooming house on my street. I mention that it was a rooming house because I suspect that the person who put it up already had a fairly hard life but was willing to try to do more to help other people. I found it strangely comforting and yes, we did do hard things that year. We still have to–not only in relation to the not-really-over pandemic but to making this beautiful falling-apart world as good as it can be for more people. The reason I focus on mobility justice on social media is that it’s about all I can manage emotionally–though also because I think it’s probably more effective to concentrate on one thing and get good at that thing than to try to make EVERYTHING better and get frayed and overwhelmed and not really make much of a dent in anything.
Today I saw this picture essay by Zoe Si and found it inspiring and comforting so I’m sharing it here in case you do too–it’s not directly about accessibility or active transportation but it’s about finding ways to keep working on whatever you’re working on. Oh, and the quotation in the title is from James Baldwin in a clip used in Zoe’s essay.
