Today some friends and I were talking about trains and the former Twitter account @Newfoundlandneedstrains came up. I seem to remember that at some point people commented that it should be @NewfoundlandandLabradorneedtrains so the account name was changed but then somebody else commented that Labrador already has trains so it finally became @needtrains. I haven’t been on Twitter for a while (though I do know it’s no longer called that). I may have to go there now to tweet (or whatever you do now it’s no longer Twitter) a link to this blog post. Anyway, in the discussion about trains, we talked about the Innu owned train Tshiuetin. Here are some links about it, for your reading and viewing pleasure:
The first one, a short film documentary, is in French, which I hope some of you can understand because it’s very moving. One guy talks about how in the 1950s the Innu weren’t allowed to travel on the train that passed through their territory—and now they own it!
A lovely photo-story from the NY Times.
A minimalist and beautiful film by Anishnaabe filmmaker Caroline Monnet, also in French but this one has English sub-titles.
Last but, sadly, not least, an article about how Canada’s long distance trains are not sustainable (though also with good suggestions for how they could be).
Happy travels, even if only from your armchair!
